Turning right here will take you to Canterbury's West Station supplying train services to Margate on the coast or inland to Ashford. From Ashford, you can travel to London or take the Eurostar trains under the tunnel to France.
The pedestrian crossing here is relatively recent, the council has pushed it out into the road in some attempt to slow down the speeding traffic. Pedestrian crossings in the UK are shown by black and white stripes across the road, and ones without lights are marked by Belisha Beacons. These are the black and white poles topped by orange globes. They are named by the person who introduced them, the Minister of Transport in 1934, Hoare Belisha.
