Westgate Level Crossing
(Photo 1999)

We are nearly down to the Westgate now and standing waiting for the gates to finish closing at the level crossing on the railway line.

On the right is a spectacular set of buildings whose roof line is probably over 400 years old. The building with the two pointed gable ends is the House of Agnes. A 16th Century house whose first floor bay windows were added in the 17th Century and the two ground floor bays were added in the 18th Century. The name `Agnes' refers to Agnes Wickfield, a character in Charles Dicken's David Copperfield.

Further down on the left here was a petrol station that's had a several occupants since ESSO pulled out. There are several small shops in this part of the city.
