The concrete bollards here were installed to prevent cars mounting the pavement when approaching the petrol station that used to be immediately on the right here. The petrol station has gone, and several tenants have used the site since.
Hedger's are sadly one of the few remnants of the `town of small shops' that existed when I came to Canterbury over 30 years ago. We've all voted with our cars and buy food at out-of-town supermarkets. Shops like Hedgers survive because they present the buyer with skill in what they do, and the very necessary personal touch.
