Into Buttermarket

Into Buttermarket

We've emerged from the Cathedral into Buttermarket, formally called `Bullstake' because this was the place that bulls were tethered and baited by dogs for sport as well as the belief that it made the meat more tender.

Ahead of us is Mercery Lane, so narrow that the buildings seem to touch, that leads to the centre of the city. Turning left here leads you to Burgate, turning right takes you into Sun Street.
