Queen Elizabeth's Guest Chamber

This remarkable building, with its the exterior covered in a painted plasterwork houses a restaurant known as Queen Elizabeth's Guest Chamber. Elizabeth I visited Canterbury in 1573 and entertained the Duke of Alençon in what was then the state room of the Crown Inn. She was perhaps planning to marry but decided against the gentleman. This episode is enshrined in the old satirical song "Froggy went a'courting".

The building is now largely owned by "Nero's Café", who have done a really tasteful conversion of the building, and serve excellent coffee as well.
