Archaeology at the Westgate |
|
The Canterbury Archaeological Trust had a couple of opportunities in 1988 to look at the Westgate. For many years, the Westgate had been the town's prison, connected by a walkway to the Police Station, which was next door. The Police Station has moved to the other side of the city on the Old Dover Road by Ridingate, and the old building is now a music school. The Westgate is now a museum, and is well worth a visit. In 1993, the bridge over the river Stour that stands in front of the Westgate needed strengthening. The Trust looked at the bridge and reported.
