Hospital Lane

Hospital Lane

This is an amazing little building hidden behind a wall. It's an Alms House. It seems to have been rebuilt several times. There are several plaques on the front of the building, the earliest says:
Leonard Cotton Esquir Some time maire of this city did place in this hospital 1 brother and 11 sisters w yearly stipend forever according to his last wil & testament made in y yeare 1605 whose charity is here remebred by Joseph Colf M of this spital

The M of this spital is presumably `Male'. The building was rebuilt by the Mayor and Corporation in 1785. Looking round the back, there are some newer buildings inside, so another revamp must have happened recently.
