St. Georges Church
(Photo 1996)

The dramatist Christopher Marlowe was baptisted in this church and the City's theatre takes its name from him. The church was destroyed by fire in the bombing raid that flattened this part of the town. When this area was excavated recently prior to the new buildings being erected, you could clearly see the black char marks of the fire. The diggers found many bodies and complete Victorian central heating system along with other earlier remains.
